FLORENCE – Facing an 0-2 deficit against Alabama State, the University of North Alabama men's tennis team won four of the next five singles matches to rally for a 4-3 home victory on Sunday. The win gives the Lions a 3-12 record on the season, matching the team's win total from a year ago.

After the comeback tied the overall score at 3-3, the final match went to three sets with Tim Heslin holding on for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

"I'm so happy for Tim," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "That was a huge win. After letting a match point slip away, he picked up his play and took it to another level."

UNA faced the early deficit after dropping the doubles point and falling at No. 5 singles. The rally, however, began with a 6-4, 6-2 singles victory at No. 2 by Yannick Pfleiderer.

A 6-0, 6-4 victory by Cian Maguire at the top spot tied the score before the Hornets regained the lead with a win at No. 3 singles. Needing two victories to stay alive, the Lions got a 6-4, 6-4 sweep by Andreas Hansen at the No. 4 position to tie the overall score at 3-3 and set the stage for the three-setter at the No. 6 spot.

"We lacked energy in doubles and that was disappointing," added Bishop. "Cian and Yannick turned things around quickly for us. Andreas was also tough today. He kept putting himself in good situations and capitalized on them. This was a really big win today and I'm proud of all the guys."

The UNA men play at UAB on Friday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in Birmingham.
