LIONS TOP WESTERN KENTUCKY FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

FLORENCE – A solid showing in singles play helped the University of North Alabama women's tennis team overcome an early deficit against Western Kentucky. Trailing 2-0, the Lions swept through positions 2-5 en route to a 4-3 win over Hilltoppers Monday afternoon at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts. The fourth straight victory gives UNA a 6-9 record on the season.

The Lions trailed by two after WKU secured the doubles point and an early singles victory. Payton Andrews started the rally with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Nina Linke then tied the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.

North Alabama took its first lead of the day on a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles by Megan Humphreys. Elise Sickle then clinched the match for the Lions, holding on for a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles.

The Hilltoppers wrapped up the scoring with a three-set victory at the top spot.

"This was a great team effort today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "This was the first time all year where we really didn't play well in doubles. The players really responded, however, with quick starts in singles play. They are playing with a lot of confidence right now."

The UNA women will return to action on March 15 with a neutral-site showdown against Mississippi Valley State. Match is set for 1 p.m. at Lagoon Park.
