MONTGOMERY – After sweeping doubles play to grab an early lead, the University of North Alabama women's tennis team won four of the six singles matches to record a 5-2 win at Alabama State on Saturday. The first win of the season evens the Lions record at 1-1 on the year.

With the early 1-0 lead after doubles play, UNA wasted little time extending its lead. Sydney Flesch posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at the top singles position. Nina Linke followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 to make the score 3-0

Kalais Going clinched the match for the Lions with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Alabama State posted wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots before Payton Andrews wrapped up the scoring with a 7-6, 7-6 victory at No. 2.

"It's always good to get the first win," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "I was proud of the effort and the energy today. Getting the doubles point and then following with a tremendous effort in singles play really set the tone for the match. Sydney (Flesch) came out and really played dominant to get us to a quick 2-0 lead. Nina (Linke) and Kalais (Going) then got on a roll and helped us clinch it."

The UNA women will play at Alabama on Feb. 2. Match time is set for 5 p.m. in Tuscaloosa.
