VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIVE-SET THRILLER TO BELLARMINE

FLORENCE – Bellarmine won the first, third and fifth sets to claim a 3-2 win over the University of North Alabama volleyball team Saturday at Flowers Hall. The 15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 16-18 loss leaves UNA with a 1-9 record on the season, including a 1-8 showing in ASUN Conference play.

Bellarmine took an early lead with its most impressive performance in the opening set. The Knights hit .294 in the frame and held UNA to seven kills. The remaining four matches featured back-and-forth action.

The Lions raced out to a 16-9 lead in the second set before holding on for the victory. Bellarmine got within three points at 23-20 before the two teams traded service errors and UNA got a kills by Sarah-Elizabeth Williams to end the game.

Neither team led by more than three points in the third set. Bellarmine broke a 22-22 tie with three straight points to get the win.

North Alabama had its best offensive showing in the fourth set. The Lions hit .312 as a team, forcing a deciding set in the process.

The fifth set featured 13 tie scores as the two teams battled. UNA fought off four match points before the Knights broke a 16-16 tie with a block and an attack error against the Lions.

Kamryn Parsonage (14 kills) and Libby Goodman (11 kills) each posted career-high numbers while setters Kennedey Johnson and Breylee Linder recorded 19 assists each. Parsonage and Johnson also notched double-doubles with 12 digs and 11 digs respectively.

Katie Gerig led the Lions with 13 digs while Claire Bullington also reached double figures in the category with 10 digs for the match.

UNA will host Bellarmine again on Sunday. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
