HUNTSVILLE – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team built a 3-0 lead, then held off Alabama A&M for a 4-3 victory Monday at the Huntsville Tennis Center. With the victory, UNA improves to 2-12 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-9.

Two quick wins in doubles play gave the Lions the early lead. Nazar Fedoryshyn and Fernando Perez won 6-3 at No. 2 before Guilherme Diniz and Jamie Bixbie also posted a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, Fernando Perez started the Lions off on the right foot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position. Guilherme Diniz then extended the UNA lead to 3-0 with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

Alabama A&M was able to rally with a pair of wins at the bottom of the lineup. Victories at No. 6 and No. 5 singles closed the gap to 3-2 before the Lions clinched the match.

After falling in the opening set at the No. 2 position, Chris Zhang clinched the deciding point with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win for the Lions. The Bulldogs added a point at No. 3 singles to wrap up the scoring.

UNA will play its next match against conference opponent Liberty on Friday, April 1. Match time is set for 10 a.m. at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts.
