LIONS DROP BASEBALL SERIES OPENER

RIICHMOND, Ky. -- Eastern Kentucky broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the sixth inning and went on to a 10-5 win over North Alabama in the first game of an ASUN Conference baseball series.

With the loss, UNA is now 9-26 overall and 2-14 in the ASUN. EKU improved to 24-13 overall and 10-6 in the conference.

The loss was UNA's eighth straight ASUN loss.

The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Austin Thrasher walked, Jonathan Lane singled and Devne Daniel singled in Thrasher to make it 1-0. Lane then scored on an RBI-groundout by Drew Hudson. Back-to-back singles by Reid Homan and Zak Majer then drove in Daniel.

EKU jumped on UNA starter Austin Nichols, scoring five runs of its own in the bottom of the first after there were two outs.

North Alabama scored a run in the second inning when Garrett Smith Singled and later came home on another RBI-single by Daniel.

The Lions tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Smith walked, stole second and scored on a Luke Harper RBI-single.

EKU then scored four in the bottom of the sixth and added an insurance run in the eighth to make the final count 10-5.

Nichols (1-5) took the loss for UNA, allowing six runs on nine hits over five and a third innings. Will Morris allowed three runs in relief.

The Lions and Colonels play again at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
