NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After trailing by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team rallied to take a lead with just under five minutes to play before falling 62-60 at Lipscomb in the ASUN Conference opener for both schools.
Down 42-29 at the 5:40 mark of the third quarter, North Alabama went on a 21-6 run, sparked by 11 points from
Alexis Callins, including three three-pointers.
The run was capped by a layup by Callins with 4:49 to play that put UNA on top 50-48.
Lipscomb regained the lead and pushed it to five points before Callins hit another three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the final margin to two points.
Callins led the Lions with 19 points, while
Skyler Gill scored 15 and
Alyssa Clutter added 10.
The Lions trailed 18-7 early and 22-11 at the end of the first quarter. A run midway through the second quarter pulled the Lions to within three points at 30-27, but the Bison were able to push their lead back to seven at the half, 34-27.
Lipscomb then led 46-39 after three quarters.
North Alabama forced 17 turnovers in the game and scored 21 points off turnovers.
With the loss, UNA falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in ASUN play. Lipscomb is 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the ASUN.
North Alabama will host Bellarmine on Thursday at CB&S Bank Arena at 6:00 p.m.
