AUBURN, Ala. (October 18, 2023) – The North Alabama men's tennis team competed at the ITA Southern Regionals on the campus of Auburn University over the weekend, wrapping up the appearance with six wins across singles and doubles competition.
In competition with other NCAA Division I players in the region, all six Lions competing earned a win, highlighted by junior Nazar Fedoryshyn winning two single matches, while freshmen Birtan Duran & Alberto Altur won two doubles matches.
In singles competition, Fedoryshyn and freshman Izan Orgiles picked up wins, all in qualifying play. After a first-round bye, Orgiles defeated Vence N'Tcha of Alabama A&M 6-3, 6-0 in the second round before falling to Noah Martens of Troy 6-1, 6-2 in the following round.
Fedoryshyn began his singles' campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sergio Tintore of New Orleans in round one and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hady El Kordy from Tulane in round two. In round three, he was defeated by Ben Koch from LSU 4-6, 7-6 with a 10-3 score in the tiebreaker.
Doubles play saw all six competing Lions compete in the main draw, highlighted by victories from Altur, Duran and sophomores Federico Scotuzzi and Lachlan Brain.
Altur/Duran kicked things off with a 7-5 victory over Yerassyl Murat/Martin Schwartzman of Samford in round one. The following round saw the duo defeat the number eight seed Isac Stromberg/Noah Schlagenhauf of Ole Miss 8-7 (2) to advance to the round of 16. They were defeated by Matias Ponce/Roan Jones of Alabama 8-1 in the third round. Brain/Scotuzzi won their first round against Vence N'Tcha/Arnav Pathanage of Alabama A&M 6-4 before a round two defeat against Welsh Hotard/George Stoupe of LSU, 8-4.

UNA Men's Tennis will return to action on Oct. 27-29, when the Lions will be represented at the UTC Steve Baras Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn. and the CCB Collegiate Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
