FLORENCE, Ala. (October 2, 2023) – North Alabama Men's Tennis earned wins in two places over the weekend, accounting for 16 total wins at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. and Samford Hidden Duals in Birmingham, Ala.
For the first time in UNA Tennis program history, a Lion individual secured a win at the ITA All-American Championships as sophomore Lachlan Brain defeated opponent Borys Zgola of Florida 6-4, 7-6 (5). He would fall to Nathan Han of Oklahoma in the second round, 7-5, 6-4.
At the Samford Hidden Dual, the Lions played Samford, UAB and Jacksonville State in singles and doubles matches, finishing with 15 wins on the weekend. The win total placed them in a two-way tie for second with Jacksonville State, with UAB finishing with the most wins with 19.
All competing Lions earned wins over the course of the weekend, with freshman Alberto Altur leading the way with five wins across singles and doubles action. He was followed by sophomore Federico Scotuzzi with four, freshmen Birtan Duran and Izan Orgiles with three each, junior Nazar Fedoryshyn with two and freshman Whitman Davis with one to round out the weekend.
Day one saw North Alabama play Samford in doubles and Jacksonville State in singles, splitting three matches with the Gamecocks and winning one against the Bulldogs. The team of Altur/Birtan defeated Darcy Nicholls and Harrison Williams of Samford, 6-0, and Altur, Fedoryshyn and Scotuzzi secured wins in their respective matchups.
UNA picked up five wins on day two against UAB in singles and Jacksonville State in doubles. Altur/Birtan earned their second doubles win followed by a 6-4 win from Orgiles/Fedoryshyn over Zach Murphy and Marko Milosavljevic of JSU. Orgiles won his first singles match of the invite in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Noah Malige, while Altur and Scotuzzi claimed their second singles victories.
Another five wins was the result of day three, with UNA taking four singles matches against Samford and one doubles match against UAB. Duran earned a first singles victory over Maksim Bogdanovich of Samford, 7-5, 6-4, and the team of Davis/Scotuzzi earned their first doubles win over Chase Parker and Parker Bradbary of UAB, 6-4. Orgiles, Altur, Duran and Scotuzzi were also victorious in their singles matches against the Bulldogs.

UNA Men's Tennis will have the weekend off before returning to the court on Oct. 12-17 for the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn, Ala.
