Wright ties program record as Lions scrap for scoreless draw

Wright’s eighth shutout of the season matches UNA record

FLORENCE, Ala. (October 5, 2023) – The UNA soccer team found themselves in a scoreless draw with Eastern Kentucky on Thursday at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex in Florence, Ala. 

North Alabama goalkeeper Adriana Wright stopped five shots in the match, including three in the second half. The scoreless draw serves as Wright's eighth shutout of the season, which ties Alex McLay (2009) and Payton Yates (2022) for the most shutouts in a single season in program history. 
In an attempt to break the scoreless draw late in the contest, Lion defender Julia Murdoch created a chance in the 89th minute, but EKU goalkeeper Marah Krick stopped the shot from finding the back of the net. 

Prior to the late surge, midfielder Kellie Hovis nearly put the Lions on the board in the 73rd minute with a shot just out of the goalkeeper's reach that ricocheted off the crossbar for an EKU goal kick.
Five of the Lions' nine shots came from players off of the bench, with Alana Watts leading the way with two. 

EKU led UNA in shots, 10-9, but North Alabama earned the edge over their opponent in corner kicks for the 13th time this season. The Lions have only been out earned in corner kicks one time this season, which came on Sept. 1 at Western Kentucky.

With the 4-3 advantage over the Colonels, North Alabama now owns a 91-25 advantage over opponents in corners this season.

North Alabama moves to 6-5-4 (2-3-2 ASUN) on the season, while the Colonels move to 4-6-4 (3-1-3 ASUN).

The Lions currently sit tied for sixth in the ASUN Conference Standings with North Florida and Queens with just four games remaining in the 2023 campaign. The top eight squads advance to the postseason ASUN tournament which will be played at host sites of the top four seeds. 

The Lions return to action on Sunday, Oct. 8 to take on Bellarmine at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday's match, five Lion players will be honored for senior day.
