LIONS NO-HIT MVSU TWICE IN SWEEP

FLORENCE, Ala. -- Four University of North Alabama pitchers combined on back-to-back no-hitters as the Lions swept a softball double-header from Mississippi Valley, 11-0 and 11-1 at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.

The two wins gave the Lions a three-game sweep of the Delta Devilettes to open the 2023 season.

Maci Birdyshaw and Danielle Taitt allowed no hits and just one walk in the opener, while the Lion hitters scored 11 runs on 13 hits. In the second game, it was Hannah Price and Mariyn Waterman who allowed no hits but walked two batters and allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice. In that game, UNA's first 11 batters to open the game all reached base and scored before an out was recorded.

UNA finished the second game with 11 runs on 14 hits.

In the opener, UNA got two runs in the first inning, six in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth on the way to a run-rule shortened win. Felicity Frame was 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Sidney Bevis was 2-for-2 with five runs batted in and Hailey Jones was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Birdyshaw (1-0) got the win, pitching four complete innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Taitt pitched pitched a perfect fifth inning.

In the second game, the first seven batters for the Lions all singled. Gracie Benton then walked and Taylor Brown was hit-by-pitch to continue the attack. After a Frame double and a walk to Holley Files, the Lions had sent 11 batters to the plate without a single out. UNA finished the inning with 11 runs on nine hits and left two runners on base.

Starting in the circle, Price retired all nine batters that she faced before giving way to Waterman. Waternan retired the MVSU batters in order in the fourth but surrendered a run in the fifth on the combination of two walks and a fielder's choice.
