JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama softball team entered Saturday's double-header at Jacksonville State ranked as one the top hitting teams in NCAA Division I softball, but the Lions were limited to just four hits as the Gamecocks swept UNA 8-0 and 5-1 in the ASUN Conference openers for both schools.
UNA is now 17-5 overall and 0-2 in the ASUN.
In the opening game, JSU got the only run that it would need in the first inning as the Gamecocks went on top 1-0 and would eventually hold UNA scoreless for just the second time this season.
JSU added two runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth and two in the sixth for an 8-0 win.
UNA, meanwhile, was held to just two hits in the game, a pair of singles from
Felicity Frame and
Georgia Land.
North Alabama starter
Maci Birdyshaw (7-3) took the loss. She allowed three runs on six hits over four complete inning.
Mariyn Waterman pitched an inning and two-thirds and allowed five runs on two hits.
It was the first time North Alabama has been run-ruled this season.
In the game two, UNA scored in the top of the first inning as
Felicity Frame drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a
Georgia Land RBI-single. JSU tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning and then added another run in the second and three in the fourth.
UNA's only other hit in the game was a
Hailey Jones single.
Elena Escobar (3-1) took her first loss of the season, allowing five runs on five hits over six innings.
The Lions and Gamecocks play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
