DELAND, Fla.-- Holding a four-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the University of North Alabama allowed three runs but the Lions escaped with a 6-5 win over FGCU to advance in the ASUN Conference Softball Tournament.
UNA, now 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament, advances to face top seeded Central Arkansas on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
UNA built a 3-0 lead, then pushed it to 6-2 after the Eagles scored two in the fourth. Freshman pitcher
Hannah Price came on in relief in the seventh to earn her first career save in a pressure-packed situation.
FGCU got a two-out single from Riley Oakes in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run, and when Oakes drew UNA into a run down trying to advance to second, Avery Viancos was thrown out at home trying to score to end the game.
The Lions improved to 32-14-1 and have won two games in the ASUN Tournament for the first time in their four appearances.
North Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Felicity Frame had a leadoff single,
Sidney Bevis sacrificed her to second and
Hailey Jones drove her home with an RBI-single.
Haven Kirby led off the second inning with a solo home run to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Jones walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Gracie benton single to make it 3-0.
FGCU got two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-2 but UNA got a run back in the fifth on a solo home run by
Georgia Land to make it 4-2.
North Alabama added two runs in the sixth as
Haven Kirby singled and
Taylor Brown reached on a fielder's choice.
Jaiden Farnetti pinch ran for Brown and
Danielle Taitt singled in Kirby for a 5-2 advantage.
Mckenzie Patterson then sacrificed in Farnetti to make it 6-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, FGCU got a leadoff home run from Meagan Ricks and then drew back-to-back walks with no outs. North Alabama brought in freshman
Hannah Price to relieve
Elena Escobar.
Price was able to get the first out on a fielder's choice FGCU followed with a run-scoring single to make it 6-4. Price got the second out on a grounder to the pitcher before a final single scored the fifth run and UNA was able to record the final out when FGCU attempted to advance.
UNA starter
Maci Birdyshaw (11-6) got the win, pitching four complete innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Escobar pitched two complete innings following Birdyshaw and gave up three runs on two hits.
