DELAND, Fla. -- With three runs in the eighth inning of the regular season finale at Stetson, the University of North Alabama pulled out an 8-5 win over the Hatters and secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament.
The Lions, now 30-14-1 overall, finished 12-11-1 in league play and in fifth place in the standings, with the top eight advancing to post-season play.
UNA led Stetson 30 in the fourth inning before the Hatters took a 5-3 lead, aided by a grand-slam.
The Lions rallied to tie the game in the fifth and it eventually went to extra-innings, still tied at 5-5.
In the eighth,
Taylor Brown was hit-by-pitch and
Holley Files pinch ran.
Felicity Frame singled and a fielding error allowed Files to score. A
Hailey Jones single later in the inning scored two more runs to make it 8-5.
The Lions first run came when
Gracie Benton reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a
Haven Kirby RBI-double.
In the third, Frame and
Sidney Bevis both singled and Frame scored on a passed ball. A
Georgia Land sacrifice fly then drove in Bevis to make it 3-0.
With UNA down 5-3 in the fifth, Jones was hit-by-pitch and Land walked. A Benton single loaded the bases and then, with two outs Brown singled in two runs to tie the game.
Elena Escobar (10-4) got the win, pitching four and a third scoreless innings of relief.
The win also gave the Lions a 2-1 series win over Stetson and dropped the Hatters to the sixth seed.
