Women’s Tennis faces Alabama A&M to open three-dual week

Lions matchup with Bulldogs to kick off road swing

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (March 12, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team travels to Huntsville, Ala. for the first of three duals this week, first facing the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 13.

The Lions will face Alabama A&M first before opening up the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule  against Stetson on Friday, March 15 and FGCU on Sunday, March 17. The roadswing will continue into the following week, as UNA is also slated for road duals against Kennesaw State on March 22 and North Florida on March 24.

North Alabama went 2-0 last week, sweeping Mississippi Valley State 6-0 in a Monday matchup on March 4 before closing with the 4-0 sweep of Jacksonville State on March 9. In the win against the Gamecocks, UNA set a new program record with over half the season to go, winning their eighth dual for the most single-season wins in the Division I era.

UNA is on a six-match win streak heading into Wednesday.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: North Alabama begins the road swing with an 8-2 record. UNA continued its dominance in doubles after last week with a 17-4 doubles record. The Lions are also getting the job done in singles with an 59.2 team win percentage at 29-20 overall. Senior Kalais Going won her seventh and eighth doubles matches last week, remaining undefeated at 8-0 across all three flights. Freshman Ada Karabacak also is unbeaten in doubles with a 7-0 record. Going and senior Marta Torres lead the way in singles victories for the Lions with five each.


SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: In the first matchup for North Alabama, Alabama A&M comes into the dual with a 4-7 record. The Bulldogs are coming off a 4-0 sweep of Alcorn State in their last outing on March 11, getting back in the win column after dropping two straight against Florida A&M and Prarie View A&M. The dual against the Lions will be the first of two contests this week for the Bulldogs, with Alabama A&M slated for a March 16 dual against Belmont. Ariadna Ondo Cerezo and Ntokozo Zungu are top pair for Alabama A&M with four wins, while Sofia Sotelo Raya leads with four wins in singles. Willis Mbandi serves as the head coach for Alabama A&M.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions lead the all-time series with a 16-2 record. UNA has won 12-straight meetings against the Bulldogs with the last loss coming in 2010.

SCOUTING THE HATTERS: Stetson sits at 2-6 on the season, with its last dual against Penn resulting in a narrow 4-3 defeat on March 10. The Hatters hope to have winning-momentum when they meet UNA on March 15, facing the Bryant Bulldogs in a home dual prior to UNA. Stetson wins their doubles matches at a 42.1 percent rate with eight wins, but the percentage increase in singles, winning 55 percent of them with 22 total wins. The leaders for the Hatters include Noa Cohen, Magdalena Hedrzak and Zali Morris with three doubles wins, while Cohen, Hedrzak and Cheri Darley share the top spot with three singles wins. The Hatters' head coach is Travis Sandlant.

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions come into the dual in search of their first win against the Hatters, going 0-2 in meetings during the 2019 and 2022 seasons.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: The final dual of the week will pit the Lions against the 7-7 FGCU Eagles. FGCU played in its first ASUN Conference dual last time out on March 11, dropping the outing 5-2 in a home dual against Lipscomb. The Eagles have won 10 matches in doubles with the leaders the third flight pair of Isabella Colmenares and Gabriela Macias. Colmenares also leads FGCU with 10 singles victories on the season, eight that have come from the second flight. The head coach of FGCU is Courtney Vernon.

SERIES HISTORY: North Alabama and FGCU met twice in 2019 and 2022, with the Eagles winning both matchups.
