HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (March 13, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team opened its three-dual road trip at Alabama A&M, defeating the Bulldogs 5-2 Wednesday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala.

The Lions moved one step closer towards their Division I win record, earning the ninth win of the season. UNA set the record in 2023, winning 10 matches in the first year for North Alabama Director of Tennis Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Men's Tennis Coach Aitor Reparaz.

Five Lions left as winners with junior Nazar Fedoryshyn, sophomore Lachlan Brain and freshman Izan Orgiles leaving Huntsville with two more wins to their tally. Sophomore Federico Scotuzzi won in doubles with partner Fedoryshyn, while Duran won his 10th straight singles match.

The dual started competitively, as both Alabama A&M and North Alabama took a win in the opening two doubles matches. Top-flight pair Fedoryshyn/Scotuzzi swept Alabama A&M's Vence N'Tcha and Freddie Lawrence 6-0 for UNA's first win, but the Bulldogs responded with a 6-1 win from the third flight. It took a decisive second-flight win by Orgiles/Brain for the lead heading into singles, beating Arnav Pathange and Yin Chih Lan, 6-4.

After securing the doubles point, UNA won four straight singles matches. Orgiles won UNA's first singles match from the second flight over Chetanna Amadike, 6-4, 6-3. Brain followed from the top flight with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vence N'Tcha.

Duran extended his win streak to a 10th match in his 7-6, 6-1 win over Yin Chih Lan from the third flight. Needing to overcome a tiebreak situation in the first set, the freshman from Istanbul remained composed to win the tight opening set en route to the two-set victory.

The winning point was won by Fedoryshyn from the fourth flight, who overcame a loss in the first frame to take the remaining two sets to win, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

UNA continues its road swing in Florida, with Atlantic Sun Conference foes Stetson and FGCU next for the Lions. The dual against the Hatters will be on Friday, March 15 at 1 p.m. while UNA faces the Eagles on Sunday, March 17 at noon.
