FLORENCE, Ala. (March 30, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Queens from the UNA Tennis Complex.
The Lions won their second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference dual, using a convincing display at home to down the Royals. UNA took the first doubles match from flight three, but Queens came to play early by winning the second-flight doubles match and forcing a tiebreaker against senior Kalais Going and sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova. Going and Bobrovnikova fended off Queens' top-flight pair to win 7-6, leading to five singles wins by the Lions to move to 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the ASUN. UNA also remains undefeated in home duals with a 6-0 record.
North Alabama showed its depth with seven Lions picking up wins against the Royals. Going and freshman Ada Karabacak claimed wins in singles and doubles, while Bobrovnikova and junior Anoek Pruijmboom were victorious in doubles action. Senior Marta Torres won her second-straight singles match from flight five, and freshman Emma Ansorge extended her streak with a fourth-straight singles victory. Freshman Marta Serra Carles rounded out the victories with her second win of the season.
Pruijmboom and Karabacak opened the scoring with their sixth-straight win in doubles, defeating Queens' Nyanyuie Grace Tomegah and Audrey Serb from flight three, 6-1. The two are a combined 25-2 in doubles play, with Pruijmboom third on the team with 12 wins and Karabacak remaining undefeated at 13-0. Going's doubles win marked her 13th win, while Bobrovnikova moves into double digits with her 10th victory.
Torres won first in singles in a swift 6-1, 6-0 showing over Tomegah from the fifth flight. Going ended the day with a strong 6-1, 6-0 showing from flight three over Andreea Onitoiu, while Serra Carles clinched the winning team point with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 from flight six over Audrey Serb.
Flight four went in favor of the Lions, with Karabacak winning her fifth singles match against Lucy Hogan, 6-1, 6-0. The final North Alabama win came from Ansorge in flight two, avoiding a third set from Jessica Maras to win 6-2, 7-5 — her 10th of the year.
The Lions cap the week against Alabama State Sunday, March 31 from the UNA Tennis Complex. First serve for the non-conference bout is set for 10 a.m.
