FLORENCE, Ala. (April 12, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team fell in a close 4-3 battle to Austin Peay on Friday, April 12 at the UNA Tennis Complex.
North Alabama battled back from an early deficit against the Governors, but Austin Peay was able to come away with the road Atlantic Sun Conference victory. UNA went down 2-0 before fighting back with singles' wins from freshman Emma Ansorge and senior Marta Torres. Freshman Ada Karabacak was victorious in her singles match, but the Govs took the remaining two courts to clinch the bout in Florence, Ala.
UNA moves to 14-8 overall and 3-6 in the ASUN. Karabacak secured two wins in the outing, winning her third-straight singles and doubles match. The Istanbul, Turkey native now has nine singles wins to go with her team-high 16 doubles wins. Ansorge and Torres picked up their 13th and 11th singles wins, respectively, while Pruijmboom was victorious for her 15th doubles win.
Prior to the match, the UNA tennis program unveiled the new Clyde "Sappo" Black Family Scoreboard. A number of community members joined UNA Athletics for the special pre-game ceremony.
Austin Peay grabbed the first doubles win of the afternoon, but Karabacak and Pruijmboom got one back with a 6-4 win from flight two. The final flight went to the Govs, with Austin Peay's Yu-Hua Cheng and Pauline Bruns narrowly defeating Torres and Ansorge, 7-6.
The Governors made it 2-0 with an opening singles win from flight six, but Torres' 7-5, 6-2 win from flight five earned UNA's first points of the dual. A second Austin Peay singles win from flight one led to Ansorge responding with a victory, holding off Denise Torrealba, 6-0, 7-6.
Trailing 3-2, North Alabama battled the Govs to three sets in the final two matches. Senior Kalais Going's match began with 6-2 first-set win before Austin Peay's Sophia Baranov secured a 6-2 second-set victory. Baranov had a strong showing in the third, overcoming the slow start to win and clinch the match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The final match went to Karabacak, who fended off Asia Fontana in a third-set tiebreaker from flight four, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 via a 7-5 tiebreaker.
UNA will look to end the season on a high note Sunday, April 14, for Senior Day against Bellarmine. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. from the UNA Tennis Complex.
