Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 6, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team fought back from an early deficit but dropped a 4-3 Atlantic Sun Conference contest at Lipscomb Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
UNA fell in the final road bout of the regular season, but the Lions made it interesting towards the end of the dual. The Bisons took the early lead with the doubles point, but North Alabama began the comeback attempt in singles play.
Both teams alternated wins in the opening four singles matches, highlighted by wins from junior
Nazar Fedoryshyn and freshman
Birtan Duran. Sophomore
Lachlan Brain was able to win a third singles match for the Lions, but Lipscomb secured the team victory with a win from flight two prior to Brain's match being complete.
North Alabama's record moved to 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the ASUN. The Lions also capped the away portion of the schedule with five wins – the most road wins in the Division I era and the most since 2017.
The Bisons began with two wins from flights two and three in doubles, with the top flight going unfinished.
Lipscomb won the first singles match from flight four, but North Alabama got on the board with a win from Duran from flight three. He claimed a 6-4, 6-4 result over the Bisons' Juan Dominguez Collado, earning his 14th singles win to extend his team lead.
The third match went in favor of Lipscomb from flight six, but the second UNA win came in a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Carlos Salas Tulla from the fifth flight. The junior's 11th win of the season kept things close with the Bisons holding a 3-2 lead heading into the final two matches.
Both final matches came down to three-sets, but Lipscomb was able to secure the conference win with a result from flight two. Freshman
Izan Orgiles competed against the Bisons' Henrique Ushizima, taking the opening frame, 6-4, before Ushizima answered with a 7-6 result in the second. The deciding set went in favor of Lipscomb's No. 2, winning 6-1 to clinch the team victory.
The top-flight match between Brain and Krzystof Wetoszka played to a third set after the two split the opening frames. UNA's top flight player won the opening set, 6-2, but Wetoszka fought to take the second set, 7-5. In the decider, Brain held strong for a 6-2 triumph, winning for the ninth time this season.
All three singles wins for Lipscomb came in straight sets. Sophomore
Federico Scotuzzi was close to forcing a third set from flight six, ultimately falling 6-1, 7-5 to Facundo Perlov.
The Lions return to the UNA Tennis Complex for the final two duals of the regular season. UNA faces Austin Peay April 12 at 2 p.m. before ending the regular season against Bellarmine April 14 at 3 p.m.
