FLORENCE, Ala. (March 22, 2025) – The University of North Alabama softball team ended its three-game set with Central Arkansas on Saturday, falling 9-3 in the series finale at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium in Florence.
The Bears move above .500 in Atlantic Sun Conference play at 14-17 overall and 3-2 in the league. North Alabama dips to 22-9 overall and 2-4 in the ASUN. Today marks UNA's first three-game skid since March of 2023.
Despite the loss, UNA had a respectable outing from senior Alivia Wilken with 5.0 innings, allowing just three earned runs and scattering six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. However, UCA senior Bailie Runner made life difficult for the UNA offense with a complete game quality start, allowing three late runs on five hits.
UNA had four of its five hits in the final two innings in a late rally attempt. The game remained close until UCA broke open a six-run sixth inning, increasing a 3-0 lead to 9-0 in the top half.
UNA, who owns a 9-0 record in games that have ended in mercy rule this season, avoided its first run-rule loss with a pair of late runs on an RBI double by Briley Dover and a sacrifice fly from Hailey Jones. The sac fly was a few feet away from being a grand slam to make it 9-5, but faded at the warning track. The runs were scored by Kylei Russell and Caroline Cartron.
Down to the final out, junior Jorja Roberson smashed a solo shot to right center to make it 9-3. The very next pitch was a groundout to end the game.
Two rookies took the circle late for UNA, including the debut of former Spain Park standout Ella Ussery who recorded her first career strikeout. Another freshman, Kaylee Snyder, finished the final 1.1 innings and retired all four batters faced with one punchout.
Today ended a 16-game hitting streak for Laura Leigh Wheeler, which is the longest hit streak by a Lion this season. Hailey Jones had an early single, reaching base in 28 of the last 29 games.
