Softball completes EKU series with one road win

Lions fall 6-0 in series finale; remain only team to beat EKU at home since 2023

RICHMOND, Ky. (March 29, 2025) – The University of North Alabama softball team left its weekend series at Eastern Kentucky with one win in three tries, as the Lions fell 6-0 in the series finale on Saturday in Richmond, Ky.

Though EKU takes the series, UNA accomplished something no other team has done since 2023 — defeat the Colonels on their home diamond. The Colonels are 32-2 at home over the last two seasons with both losses coming to North Alabama. The last non-UNA team to beat EKU in Richmond was Jacksonville State in 2023.

The Colonels improve to 24-9 overall and remain atop the Gold Division of the Atlantic Sun Conference with an 8-1 record. The Lions dip to 23-12 overall and 3-6 in league play — but claim EKU's only ASUN loss.

EKU broke through in the third inning with a homer from Kennedy Drafton, then crossed two more on a wild pitch and a fielding error. Two more unearned runs scored in the fifth inning on a pair of UNA throwing errors, then an RBI single added insurance in the sixth.

The Lions had four hits in the effort, including a double from senior Ryleigh Boyett and singles from Laura Leigh Wheeler, Natalie Shaw and Emma Kate Wright. Boyett, via pinch runner Gyvan Hammons, reached third in the late innings, but a strikeout stranded the potential run.

Following their win on Friday, Katie Simon and Kaylee Snyder did most of the work in the finale. However, junior transfer Lily Boswell made her UNA debut in the circle during the sixth inning. The Rainsville, Ala. native entered with the bases loaded and one out, but got a pair of quick outs to end the threat.

Today marks just the fourth time this season UNA has committed three or more errors in a game. All four games results in losses. This also marks just the second shutout of the Lions this season with the other coming against Ole Miss in February.
