Women’s Golf opens spring season in Huntsville

Lions to play three rounds at Hampton Cove

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (March 3, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's golf team opens the spring portion of the schedule on Monday with the Huntsvillle.org Intercollegiate, hosted by Samford at Hampton Cove in the Huntsville area in Owens Cross Roads, Ala.

This will also be the site of the 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on April 14-16.

NOTABLES

THE FIELD: The Lions are one of 12 teams in the field and one of three within the state of Alabama along with Troy and host Samford. Fellow ASUN members Bellarmine and West Georgia will also get a preview for next month's championship. The rest of the field includes Oakland, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian, Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Belmont and Southern Illinois.

THE COURSE: Hampton Cove is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and is nestled in Huntsville, Alabama with a 54-hole facility with terrain that drastically changes from one side of the property to the other. The Highlands Course is one of the most picturesque and playable courses on the Trail. Long, waving grasses frame dramatically, rolling terrain and beautiful bent grass greens.

THE LINEUP: UNA will go with two seniors and three freshmen this week, including veterans Jahnavi Prakhya and Hannah Dees in the top two slots. Elsa Steinarsdottir will get her first career start for the Lions. Rounding out the order are freshmen Sirichaya Chanpen and Olivia Whittle, who played in four events in the fall.

ORDER OF EVENTS: The Lions completed a practice round Sunday afternoon. Rounds 1 and 2 will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The final round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The Lions will start on first five holes.

LAST TIME OUT: The Lions concluded the fall last October by finishing fourth of 10 teams in The Judson hosted by Southern Miss. In a field of 60 golfers, the Lions placed four in the top-25 of the individual leaderboard. Redshirt sophomore Kerigan Klauber was the highlight of this group, earning her first-career top-10 finish with a card of 73-73-74 to finish four-over-par 220. She finished with sole possession of 10th place.

HUNTSVILLE REWIND: Last year, the Lions completed in the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate on March 6 and placed ninth of 16 teams. Returning Lions Jahnavi Prakhya and Hannah Dees each finished tied for 34th with matching scores of 233. Graduated player Allycia Gan had a strong tournament last season, tying for seventh with a 223, including a two-under-par 70 in the opening round.

FAMILIAR FOES: Teams that also played in last year's tournament include Samford, Troy, Oakland, Tennessee Tech, Belmont, Bellarmine and Southern Illinois.
