Women’s Tennis drops 4-3 battle to FGCU

Lions fall in final singles bout for first loss in 11 duals

FLORENCE, Ala. (March 30, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team were defeated Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 heartbreaker to the visiting FGCU Eagles in Florence.

The battle from the UNA Tennis Courts went in favor of the Eagles, who overcame a defeat in doubles play to secure four singles wins en route to the road victory. UNA and FGCU battled to the final singles match with the team score tied at three apiece, but the Eagles took the final contest in three sets.

The defeat snapped an 11-dual winning streak for the Lions, which set a new program record. North Alabama's last defeat came on Feb. 4, when UAB also took a 4-3 contest against UNA from the UNA Tennis Courts. The Lions conclude the weekend with a 13-3 overall record and 5-1 ASUN record.

Six Lions added wins to their tally, coming across both singles and doubles play. Sophomores Emma Ansorge and Mathilde Delaney secured their seventh doubles win of the season, while senior Anoek Pruijmboom and sophomore Ada Karabacak picked up their third-straight doubles victory.

Senior Stanislava Bobrovnikova won her 12th singles match of the season, while junior Senem Ocal earned her 10th singles win to round out the UNA victories.

North Alabama had a strong start in doubles play, taking two of the three courts. Ansorge and Delaney combined for the first doubles victory in a 6-2 triumph over Paloma Goldsmith and Nora Svensson. Karabacak and Pruijmboom provided the clinching doubles point in a 6-3 win over FGCU's Francisca Vergara and Anjali Kotecha on court three.

FGCU struck first in singles play with a victory on court five, but Bobrovnikova answered back with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) triumph from the top flight over Ashley Matz. Two more FGCU wins followed Bobrovnikova's win, with the Eagles taking the 3-2 team lead after victories on court two and four.

UNA's Ocal provided the tying team point from court six, overcoming a set down to defeat FGCU's Goldsmith, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. The deciding match came from court three, with Karabacak looking to defeat the Eagles' Anjali Kotecha for the clinching point. The contest would go to a third set, but Kotecha saw the match out in the final frame with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win.
