FLORENCE, Ala. (March 9, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team got back to its winning ways Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 home victory from Florence over the visiting Chattanooga Mocs.
North Alabama had a strong performance against the Mocs at the UNA Tennis Courts, securing a third-straight home victory while remaining unbeaten in home duals. The Lions won their fourth dual in five outings and obtained its second-consecutive win against the Mocs.
All seven competing Lions earned a win across singles and doubles play. Senior Nazar Fedoryshyn and sophomore Birtan Duran picked up their fourth doubles win, while freshman pairing Samu Dominguez and Satoru Nakajima won for the first time as a doubles pair.
Nakajima and Duran added singles' wins to their tally, with junior Lachlan Brain victorious for the fourth time in singles play. Sophomores Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles avenged their doubles defeat on the day with respective singles victories.
UNA's record moved to 7-3 on the season, while Chattanooga fell to 8-7 on the year.
The Mocs opened with the first doubles win of the day, with UTC's Jakub Jupa and Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez defeating Altur and Orgiles from the top flight, 6-2. UNA's Duran and Fedoryshyn answered back with a win from court two, taking a 7-5 triumph against the Mocs' Cortland Grove and Kristof Kincses.
The third doubles match went to a tiebreak to determine a winner, but North Alabama's Dominguez and Nakajima earned the Lions' team point with a 7-6 (7-4) victory against Chattanooga's Ryan Mudre and Jaxon Lamb.
Playing all six singles matches, North Alabama dominated with five wins en route to the team victory.
Earning the first win was Altur, who defeated UTC's Mudre from court three, 6-1, 6-3. Nakajima claimed UNA's second win, winning by two in the second set towards a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over the Mocs' Lamb from court six. The Lions clinched the dual from court three via Orgiles, claiming a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Chattanooga's Castillo-Sanchez.
Duran's match from court five went three-sets, but the sophomore saw the matchup out via a super tiebreak. He took a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker, defeating the Mocs' Kincses, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). North Alabama completed the dual with a top-flight win by Brain, who went on to defeat UTC's Jupa, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
