FLORENCE, Ala. (March 9, 2025) – The University of North Alabama softball team bounced back from its first home losses suffered on Saturday, ending a 10-game home stand with a 5-2 statement win over Samford on Sunday at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium.
The Lions are 18-5 overall and finish a 10-game home stand with an 8-2 record. UNA won three of its five games at the UNA Invitational and beat all three teams once — Samford, ULM and Detroit Mercy.
Junior Katie Simon, who suffered her first loss last night despite a quality start, responded with a complete game win over the Bulldogs. She allowed just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Her last four starts have been complete 7.0 inning games with no more than two earned runs allowed.
Junior transfer Laura Leigh Wheeler was also valuable at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Her first was a double in the bottom of the first inning, bringing home Katie Davis who moved into the two-hole on Sunday. Davis came back around in the third inning and made it 2-0 with a double to score Kylie Russell.
The third inning brought two more runs, making it 4-0 following RBI singles from Wheeler and senior Hailey Jones. Samford hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Simon's only blemish, but a Briley Dover single in the sixth added insurance.
Davis went 2-for-4 and finished with six hits in the tournament. Head coach Ashley Cozart shuffled the lineup even more with top hitter Briley Dover in the leadoff spot. Dover added a hit, while Jones and Gyvan Hammons accounted for the other hits.
