NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: North Alabama won a thrilling three-game set against Lipscomb last weekend, defending home turf with a 7-1 win in the opener and a 4-3 win in the rubber match. The Bisons took game two by a 5-2 final in comeback fashion. The series win marks the fifth straight time UNA has defeated Lipscomb in a three-game set. Lipscomb's most recent — and only — series win over UNA came in 2019.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: UNA has a 25-13 overall record with a 5-7 record in conference games. The Lions lead the ASUN with a 2.36 ERA, which also ranks 20th in the NCAA. At the plate, the Lions have also experienced success with the third-best batting average in the ASUN at .304.
CIRCLE CONQUERERS: The Lions set a new Division I school record last season with a 2.17 ERA, giving up 113 runs over 364.1 innings. This season, UNA has continued that success with a 2.36 ERA behind senior ace
Alivia Wilken, twin transfers
Emily Simon and
Katie Simon and true freshman
Kaylee Snyder. Last week against Lipscomb, Wilken went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a pair of complete game quality starts.
KEEPING UP WITH JONES: Senior
Hailey Jones is UNA's leading hitter with a .380 average, including a team-high 13 doubles, four triples and 39 RBIs. The multi-time all-conference selection has 211 career hits and a .317 career batting average in four seasons at UNA. Last month, Jones broke the all-time career doubles record last set by Jessica Liddy with 52 from 2004-07. Jones currently has 54 career doubles.
TRIPLE THREATS: The Lions rank 16th in the nation with 14 triples this season. Sophomore
Briley Dover and senior
Hailey Jones have four triples apiece, which ranks second in the ASUN.
KEEPING IT 600: UNA head coach
Ashley Cozart won her 600th career game two weekends ago at EKU, owning a career record of 602-233-1 over 16 seasons as a head coach. She has a 411-187-1 record in 12 seasons at UNA. She also coached four seasons at NAIA Lindsey Wilson College from 2010-13.
RANKING RISERS: The Lions enter the weekend ranked 79th in the NCAA RPI Rankings, which includes 309 teams. Five ASUN teams are in the top 100, including North Florida (41), Stetson (67), Central Arkansas (73) and EKU (76). Austin Peay is not far behind at 110.
CROWD IN THE THOUSANDS: North Alabama hosted nationally-ranked Alabama at the Florence Sportsplex on March 26, drawing the second-largest crowd in program history with 3,058 fans. UNA hosted a live concert before and after the game featuring Shoals artists Austin Bohannon and Gary Nichols. Both teams hosted a post-game autograph session after the game.
SCOUTING THE GOVS: Austin Peay enters with an impressive 30-8 record, previously owning the NCAA's longest win streak at 24 games. The Govs are 8-4 in league play following a series win over Bellarmine. APSU is the top hitting team in the ASUN with a .336 team batting average and a .567 slugging percentage. The Govs dig the long ball this season, leading the league and ranking 18th in the NCAA with 52 home runs. All nine starters are batting above .300, including senior Kylie Campbell batting .410 with 48 hits. Sophomore Katie Raper has 10 homers to lead the team. Senior pitcher Samantha Miener leads the pitching staff with a 2.71 ERA over 93.0 innings.
SERIES HISTORY: UNA and Austin Peay have battled 13 times in softball, including twice in 1990 and 11 times since UNA's move to Division I before the 2019 season. The Lions have an 8-5 record against APSU, including a 3-0 win to eliminate the Govs from the 2024 ASUN Championship Tournament. Austin Peay won the 2024 series with a pair of wins in Florence, while UNA swept the Govs in Clarksville in 2023.
LAST MEETING: UNA and Austin Peay met in Oxford, Ala. at the ASUN Championship Tournament on May 7, 2024. In the single elimination round, the No. 5 seeded Lions ousted the No. 8 Govs with a 3-0 win.
Sidney Bevis and
