CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (April 13, 2025) – The University of North Alabama softball team wrapped up a three-game series at Austin Peay on Sunday, falling 8-4 in the rubber match in Clarksville, Tenn.
Austin Peay improved to 32-9 on the season with a 10-5 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play to sit second place in the ASUN Gold Division. The Lions dip to 26-15 and 6-9 in league play.
Despite the series loss, UNA had 10 more hits on the weekend with a 31-21 advantage. Senior Hailey Jones had seven of those hits, including one today. Junior outfielder Gyvan Hammons led the way Sunday with three singles, while Laura Leigh Wheeler added a single and double.
The Govs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as the Lions had an opportunity to tie in the fourth with a leadoff single by Hammons. Wheeler sent one to the outfield gap, but a throw to third resulted in an out as Hammons slightly slid past the bag.
APSU added to the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of two-run homers. One of the homers was from Brie Howard, who did it again in the fifth. The Lions answered in the sixth with an RBI double from Wheeler to score Hammons and make it 7-1. After a pitching change for APSU, Ryleigh Boyett entered and knocked an RBI single to score senior Hailey Jones.
With two on, Bayleigh Rouse was hit by a pitch to load the bases. This brought up Jorja Roberson, who smacked a two-run double to make it 7-4. Austin Peay escaped the jam by throwing out Rouse at third on the play, then completing a double play lineout.
The Govs added one more in the sixth and the Lions left two on base in the seventh to strand the tying run on deck.
UNA scored four runs in all three games this weekend.
