JACKSONVILLE (April 17, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team opened its 2025 ASUN Tournament in dramatic fashion, holding off the Austin Peay Governors with a 4-3 quarterfinal triumph in Jacksonville.
The No. 3 seeded Lions are now set to face No. 2 North Florida in the ASUN Tournament Semifinals on April 18, at 4 p.m. CT.
Facing the No. 6-seeded Governors, North Alabama secured its first all-time ASUN Tournament win in program history against Austin Peay. The bout proved to be competitive, with the Governors rallying back after the Lions took the early doubles point. North Alabama got up to a 3-1 team lead, but two consecutive wins from Austin Peay tied the dual with court three determining the winner.
A three-set battled ensued, but the Lions were able to advance to the next round thanks to a win from North Alabama junior Eeva Ristola.
Ristola and senior Stanislava Bobrovnikova secured two wins on the day to pace the Lions in the dual. Fresh off their ASUN Doubles Pair of the Year win, the duo combined for a doubles win before taking their respective flights. Junior Lena Karlovcan and sophomore Mathilde Delaney won their doubles match from court three, with junior Senem Ocal taking a singles win from flight five.
Bobrovnikova and Ristola started the contest with the first win of the day, defeating Austin Peay's Yu-Hua Cheng and Denise Torrealba from the top flight, 6-3. Delaney and Karlovcan sent the dual to singles with a 6-2 triumph from court three over Elena Thiel and Asia Fontana.
Austin Peay rebounded from its doubles defeat with the first win in singles from court six, but Ocal answered back with 6-4, 6-1 victory from court five over the Govs' Thiel for UNA's first singles victory. Bobrovnikova secured her second win of the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 top-flight win over Sophia Baranov, but the Governors made it interesting with two-straight wins from flights two and four.
With court three deciding who advances to the next round, UNA's Ristola and Austin Peay's Fontana faced off in a three-set battle. Ristola struck first with a 6-2 first set, but Fontana got a response in the second with a 6-1 victory. The final set saw Ristola fend off the Govs' third flight with a 6-3 win in the final frame.
