ROME, Ga. (May 8, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team's historic season came to a close Thursday afternoon in Rome, Ga., with the Lions suffering a 4-0 setback to No. 48 UNC Charlotte in the UTR NIT Tournament Semifinal.

North Alabama concludes the 2025 season with a 19-6 record, finishing with the most single-season wins in Division I program history. The 19 wins are the most in a season since winning 21 matches in the 1988 season — 37 years ago.

Following a 4-2 quarterfinal victory yesterday against Middle Tennessee, the Lions battled the 49ers for the first time in program history. UNA looked to add a second win over a ranked opponent, but Charlotte took the early advantage with the doubles point before claiming three-straight singles wins.

The 49ers advanced to the WNIT Finals, with Charlotte set to face No. 57 Washington State on Friday, May 9 at noon.

Opening the doubles portion was the 49ers' Prisca Abbas and Lucia Aranda, going on to defeat Senem Ocal and Mathilde Delaney from court three, 6-1. Court two saw Charlotte take the doubles-point advantage with Ni Xi and Shona Nakano overcoming UNA's Anoek Pruijmboom and Ada Karabacak in a 6-2 result.

In singles, court five was claimed by the 49ers in Abbas' 6-0, 6-1 win over Ocal. Aranda added the third team point for Charlotte from court four, defeating Delaney, 6-4, 6-3. Nakano won 7-5, 6-3 over Pruijmboom on court six to finish.
