VOLLEYBALL TEAM SWEEPS LEE AT HOME

FLORENCE – Megan Gorey hit .343 with a match-high 16 kills to lead the University of North Alabama volleyball team to a 3-0 Gulf South Conference win over Lee Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The senior from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., added four service aces, two blocks and three digs as the Lions improved to  14-9 overall and 10-4 in GSC play.

The 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 victory avenged a five-set loss earlier this season on the Flames' home floor. It also gives UNA an 8-1 record this season at Flowers Hall.

North Alabama started fast in the opening set. Gorey paced the offensive attack with six kills as the Lions jumped out to a 17-7 lead. Lee was able to rally, using a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 24-20. Gorey, however, ended the set with a kill to give UNA the early lead in the match.

The second set featured the same final score with a much different path by each team. Lee led much of the game, and held a 13-8 advantage midway through the set. The Lions grabbed their first lead at 19-18 on a service ace by Ashtyn Kapovich and never trailed again. UNA closed the set on a 10-2 run to take a 2-0 overall lead.

UNA had its best offensive showing in the third set, hitting .333 as a team. Lexie Bradley had seven of her 11 kills in the frame as the Lions turned an early 2-1 deficit into a 10-5 lead and never looked back.

Andrea De Leon finished the match with 39 assists and completed the double-double performance with 13 digs. Kapovich led all players with 18 digs on the night.

Lee (7-16 overall, 4-9 GSC) was led by Lauren Williams and Latrice Johnson, who had six kills each.

UNA will host West Georgia Friday night. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
