SOFTBALL TEAM CRUISES TO SWEEP OVER BRESCIA

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team outscored Brescia 32-1 in a double-header sweep Tuesday afternoon at home. The 15-0, 17-1 mercy-rule victories gives the Lions an 11-1 record heading into their weekend Gulf South Conference series against West Alabama.

The midweek series was added to the UNA schedule at the last week after last weekend's three-game series at Delta State was rained out. Brescia (0-2) was seeing action for the first time on the year. The Bearcats managed only four hits on the day while UNA pounded out 32 runs on 31 hits.

Brittney Gillison was 6-for-7 at the plate while Ashley Bonner drove in six runs. UNA also used three different pitchers, combining for 19 strikeouts without yielding an earned run.

In the opener, the Lions took a seven-run lead into the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring eight more times in the frame. Gillison was 4-for-4 at the plate while Bonner added five RBI in a 2-for-2 showing, including a bases-clearing double to break the game open. Libby Olinger and Carey Grace Peebles added two hits each for UNA.

Hillary Carpenter improved to 6-0 in the circle. The sophomore pitched a one-hit shutout in the first four innings. Tori Davis struck out three batters in the final inning to preserve the shutout.

The offensive numbers continued to climb in the nightcap. Leading 2-0 heading into the third, the Lions sent 17 batters to the plate in a 12-run explosion. Courtney Shields led off the inning with a single—the first of five straight hits for UNA. Bonner added another RBI-double while Gillison blasted her second home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center.

Seven different UNA players had two hits each. Olinger finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI. Gillison, Madeline Lee and Brianna Caldwell also went 2-for-3 at the plate while Shields and Reagan Tittle each posted 2-for-4 showings. Amy Carden was also 2-for-2 with an RBI.

After allowing a single to lead off the fifth inning, Davis recovered to strike out the side and secure the win.

Bree Blevins (6-1) picked up the pitching victory. She allowed two hits in four innings with eight strikeouts. Brescia turned an error into an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning, but could never find an offensive rhythm.

UNA is scheduled to host West Alabama in a three-game set beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Following the double-header, the teams are slated to play a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
