FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team remained undefeated in Gulf South Conference play with two wins over West Alabama Saturday at home. The Lions (14-1 overall, 5-0 GSC) won 4-3 in eight innings before completing the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the two teams heading to extra innings deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. After a scoreless top half of the eighth, the Lions got the winning run in the bottom of the frame. An RBI-single by Carey Grace Peebles scored Madeline Lee from third base for the winning run.
Freshman Ashton Edwards (1-0) picked up her first career win in the circle. She entered the game in the fourth with the score tied at 3-3 and tossed three scoreless innings. She allowed three hits and had a strikeout against 13 batters faced.
At the plate, each team posted eight hits in the first game. Lee and Brittany Gillison each went 2-for-3 for the Lions. Each of Gillison's hits went for extra bases and drove in a run. She had an RBI-double in the second inning and a solo home run to lead off the fourth.
In the second game, North Alabama trailed 2-1 in the third inning before rallying for the victory. A four-run spurt in the bottom of the third put the Lions ahead for good. UNA sent nine batters to the plate in the frame, scoring four runs off four hits.
UNA regained the lead at 3-2 with RBI-singles by Libby Olinger and Brooklynn Clark. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Gillison and Peebles then gave the Lions some breathing room and accounted for the final score.
Hillary Carpenter improved to 7-0 on the year in the circle. She tossed 6.1 innings before hitting two straight batters with one out in the top of the seventh. Edwards came in an recorded two straight outs to preserve the win.
Clark and Peebles each went 3-for-3 at the plate to represent six of the Lions' eight hits in the second game.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m.
