SOFTBALL LIONS STAY HOT AT CHILLOUT

HUNTSVILLE – The University of North Alabama softball team continued its hot streak to open the season with two more victories at the UAH Charger Chillout Saturday afternoon. The Lions knocked off No. 5 Wayne State 9-0 before downing Ohio Dominican 9-1 in five innings to improve to 6-0 on the year.

Madeline Lee was 4-for-5 on the day with five RBI, while the UNA pitching staff yielded only a single run. The Lions will wrap up play at the event Sunday, taking on Maryville at 11 a.m. and Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. at the Kiwanis SportsPlex.

Against Wayne State, BreeAnna Blevins (3-0) scattered five hits in the complete-game shutout. She struck out four batters while the UNA offense came alive late to put the game away.

The Lions plated a single run in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Back-to-back two-out hits by Courtney Shields and Amy Carden gave UNA the 1-0 lead. North Alabama scored twice in the top of the fourth and sixth innings before using a four-run seventh to put the game out of reach.

Lee and Reagan Tittle each went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Both of Lee's hits were doubles. Brittany Gillison also added two hits for the Lions.

UNA jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three innings against Ohio Dominican before recording the 9-1 mercy-rule victory. Lee again led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. She drove in both runs with an RBI-double in the top of the first inning. With the Lions already leading 2-0, the hit to left center gave UNA a 4-0 lead.

Harlie Barkley led off the second inning with a walk and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Libby Olinger. In the top of the third, UNA got a two-run single through the left side by Carey Grace Peebles. A sacrifice fly by Carden and another RBI-single by Olinger wrapped up the scoring.

UNA pitcher Hillary Carpenter and Ashton Edwards combined to limit the Panthers to just three hits. Carpenter improved to 3-0 after pitching the first two innings. After allowing a run in the bottom of the third, Edwards recovered to toss two scores innings from the circle.
