FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team scored five runs over the final three innings to pull away for a 5-0 Gulf South Conference victory over Christian Brothers Saturday at home. With the win, UNA improves to 17-4 overall and 6-3 in GSC play.
Hillary Carpenter recorded her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. The sophomore from Hatton, Ala., stuck out six to improve to 9-2 on the season. CBU's Jennifer Gonzalez led off the game with a double to right center. The Bucs, however, would not record another hit in the contest.
At the plate, the Lions got their offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning. Madeline Lee led off the frame with a double to left field. She later scored on an RBI-single by Harlie Barkley. Ashely Bonner also walked and later scored on an RBI ground out by Courtney Shields to give UNA a 2-0 lead.
North Alabama opened the fifth inning with three straight hits to extend its lead. Following a lead-off single by Brittany Gillison, back-to-back doubles by Carey Grace Peebles and Reagan Tittle gave the Lions a 3-0 lead. Peebles also scored on a ground out by Bonner to make the score 4-0.
An RBI-single by Gillison in the bottom of the sixth inning wrapped up the scoring for the Lions. The senior from Pell City finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate.
The same two teams will play a double-header at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
