SOFTBALL TEAM GOES 1-2 ON SATURDAY

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team posted a 1-2 record in a trio of one-run games Saturday at home. After coming up short 2-1 to West Georgia in the final game of a three-game Gulf South Conference series, the Lions split against Truman, falling 3-2 before getting a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, West Georgia plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to get the victory and avoid the three-game sweep. After drawing a walk and reaching third base with two out, Marley Stowers scored on a wild pitch to put the Wolves ahead.

North Alabama (18-4) loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but could not score. It was the second time in the game the Lions left the bases loaded. UNA stranded nine base runners in the contest.

Courtney Shields went 2-for-4 at the plate. Bailey Nelson drive in the lone run with an RBI-single in the bottom of the third inning. Hannah Bodenhorn (1-1) took the pitching loss for the Lions. The freshman surrendered two runs off six hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Against Truman, UNA held a 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs plated two run in the frame to tie the game, then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. The Lions out-hit Truman 8-5 but against struggled with leaving runners on base, totaling seven for the game.

Single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings gave UNA the early lead. Nelson led off the game with a single and later scored on an RBI-single by Shields. Nelson also started the third inning with a triple to right field. Harley Barkley's hit then drove her home to give the Lions the two-run lead.

After getting seven hits in the first four innings, the Lions could manage only one hit the rest of the way as Truman rallied. Nelson finished the second game 3-for-4 at the plate. Amy Carden was also 2-for-2.

Carpenter took the loss to fall to fall to 7-2 on the year. She struck out five and allowed five hits in seven innings of work.

North Alabama had to overcome a pair of Truman rallies in the nightcap to hold on for the win. The Lions led 3-0 before a two-run fifth inning by TSU closed the gap. After UNA extended its lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs scored again in the top of the seventh to make one more push.

Raven Cole finished off her complete-game performance in the final inning to get the win. The junior improved to 10-1 after recording a season-high 12 strikeouts.

At the plate, UNA got things going in the bottom of the third. A double by Reagan Tittle was followed by back-to-back RBI-singles by Nelson and Barkley. A solo homerun by Anna Gayle Norris gave the Lions the 3-0 lead before TSU plated its two runs. Shields drove in a run with a single through the left side to account for the winning margin.

Nelson and Tittle each went 2-for-3 in the game while Barley finished 2-for-4. For the day, Nelson was 6-for-11 with a pair of RBI.

North Alabama will return to GSC play next weekend with a three-game series at Shorter. The series against the third-ranked Hawks will be a rematch of last season's GSC tournament finals. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. (EST) before concluding the series with a single game at 1 p.m. (EST) on Sunday.
