SOFTBALL SWEEPS DELTA STATE TO CLAIM FIRST PLACE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team grabbed sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference with two wins over No. 21 Delta State at home on Friday. UNA recorded the 7-3 and 9-1 victories to break a first-place tie atop the GSC standings and improve to 34-4 on the season.

Brooklynn Clark went 6-for-7 at the plate with two RBI as the fourth-ranked Lions totaled 25 hits on the day to extend their winning streak to 17 consecutive games. Both teams entered the day with identical 16-2 records in GSC play. With the sweep, UNA moves to 18-2 while UAH and Delta State are tied for second place with 16-4 conference records.

In the opener, the Lions raced out to an early lead, scoring runs in each of the first three innings. UNA scored three in the first, one in the second and two in the third to grab a 6-0 lead. An RBI-single by Clark and a two-run double by Anna Gayle Norris started the scoring.

In the bottom second inning, Bailey Nelson scored from first base on an RBI-single by Courtney Shields. Madeline Lee and Carmen Whitfield each drove in runs in the third inning to give North Alabama the six-run lead.

After Delta State plated two runs in the top of the sixth, the Lions responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame. A solo homerun by Reagan Tittle just cleared the left field fence to make the score 7-2. Another DSU run in the top of the seventh inning accounted for the final score.

Hillary Carpenter improved to 17-2 on the season with the pitching win in game 1. The junior worked seven strong innings, allowing three runs off four hits. She struck out five.

At the plate, Clark was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Nelson and Shields each had a 2-for-4 showing.

Delta State struck first in the second game with a single run in the top of the first inning. The lead, however, would not last long. UNA sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs to take the lead for good.

RBI-doubles by Tittle and Harlie Barkley made the score 2-1. Norris and Lee then each singled home runs. The Lions also got an unearned run from a DSU fielding error to make the score 5-1.

In the second inning, back-to-back singles by Nelson and Shields started a rally that scored two more runs.  Nelson scored on a ground-out by Clark and Shields scored from third on a wild pitch to give UNA a 7-1 lead. Single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings ended the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Amy Carden reached on one error and scored on another to make it 8-1. The winning run then came when a single up the middle by Nelson scored pinch runner Danielle Cruickshank from third base.

After getting 13 hits in the opener, the Lions produced 12 hits in the second game. Nelson was 2-for-2, while Tittle and Clark each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Raven Cole pitched a one-hitter to get the win. She struck out six with only three walks to improve to 16-1 on the year.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex.
