SOFTBALL LIONS PUNCH TICKET TO DENVER

FLORENCE – After winning the opener 3-0, the University of North Alabama softball team rallied for a 6-5 victory in the nightcap to sweep Rollins in front of 822 fans Wednesday at the NCAA South Region Super Regional. With the win, UNA advances to the NCAA Division II Women's College World Series next week in Denver, Colo. The Lions (55-6) become the first team to advance to the championships, which feature the last eight remaining teams completing for a national championship.

Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning of the second game, the Lions were down to their final out when Harlie Barkley connected on a double to left field that scored Courtney Shields from second base and Brooklynn Clark from first to tie the game. The two-out rally consisted of back-to-back-to-back hits by the three seniors to extend the game.

After the Tars failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, UNA got a lead-off walk by Reagan Tittle to start the top of the eighth. Consecutive errors by Rollins moved her to third before Madeline Lee's sacrifice fly to center field scored the go-ahead run.

Hillary Carpenter (28-3) then recorded three straight ground outs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win. The junior from Hatton got the pitching win after entering the game in the fifth inning in relief of starter Raven Cole. After tossing a complete-game shutout in the opener, the four-inning victory in the second game gave Carpenter 32 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.

The second game went back and forth from the start. UNA grabbed the early lead after scoring twice in the top of the first inning and once in the second. RBI-singles by Clark and Anna Gayle Norris, along with a run-scoring double by Bailey Nelson gave the Lions a 3-0 lead. After Rollins added a single run in the bottom of the second, UNA was in position to add to its 3-1 lead in the top of the third.

With runners on second and third with one out, however, Rollins ace Niki Fogle pitched out of the jam without yielding a run. Following that, the momentum shifted in favor of the visitors, who scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. Single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings gave the Tars the 5-3 advantage.

Fogle, who pitched all 14 innings on the day for the Tars and appeared to get stronger as the innings mounted, led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to chase Cole from the circle.

Neither team scored in the sixth inning, and the Lions recorded two quick outs in the seventh before the rally began. Singles up the middle by Shields and Clark brought Barkley to the plate, who ripped a 1-0 pitch over the left fielder's head and advanced all the way to third on the throw home.

For the game, Clark was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Barkley, who played in her 220th and 221st career games as a Lion to set a school record, was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the opener, Rollins didn't record a hit until the sixth inning as Carpenter recorded her 11th shutout of the season. UNA scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another in the fourth.

Three of UNA's five hits in the game came in the first inning as the Lions jumped on Fogle early. Nelson led off the inning with a single. She then scored on Shields' RBI-double to right center. It was the 22nd double of the season for the senior from Columbiana.

Shields moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI-single by Clark to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, it was Clark's turn to break a record. Her solo home run made the score 3-0 and represented her school-record 16th homer of the year. The total breaks the previous mark of 15, held by Jessica Liddy in 2005 and Andrea Palmer in 2010.

Clark was the only UNA player with multiple hits in the opener, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Her 4-for-6 showing on the day ups her season batting average to an even .500.

Carpenter got the one-hit shutout and notched her 21st complete game of the season. She struck out three and walked four.

Fogle (27-12) took both losses after throwing 195 pitches on the day. Rollins ends its season with a 40-16-1 record.
