LIONS DOWN LEE 8-0 TO COMPLETE SWEEP

CLEVELAND, TENN., – A third consecutive mercy-rule victory over Lee on Sunday capped a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep for the University of North Alabama softball team. The Lions pounded out eight runs off 13 hits and got another solid pitching performance in the 8-0 road win. UNA is now 15-2 on the season and 8-0 in GSC play.

On Sunday, UNA scored in every inning while Brittany Ledbetter became the third starting pitching to record a complete-game win in the series. The junior from Vance pitched six shutout innings, scattering five hits with four strikeouts. She improved to 4-1 on the year with the win.

Bailey Nelson went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the way. She led off the game with a single and later scored the Lions' first run on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Shollenberger. An RBI-single by freshman Meleah Hargett in the bottom of the second inning gave UNA a 2-0 before the Lions added three more runs in the third.

North Alabama batted through the lineup in the frame, beginning with Alex Brown's lead-off single. Shollenberger drove home Brown with a double to right field, then scored on an RBI-single by Reagan Tittle. Veronica Westfall gave the Lions a 5-0 lead with a run-scoring double to left center.

Single runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings set the stage for the eight-run mercy rule. UNA loaded the bases before Shelby Woodard was hit by a pitch to score the next run. Hargett led off the fifth inning with a single and later scored on Brown's single up the middle.

Harley Stokes scored the final run of the day for the Lions. She was hit by a pitch in the top of the sixth inning and later scored on Sydney Sanders' sacrifice fly.

Brown was 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI. Shollenberger and Hargett each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate while Westfall was 2-for-4.

UNA will step outside of GSC on Tuesday. The Lions will host Miles in a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
