LIONS DOWN LEE 8-0 IN GSC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT



FLORENCE – Reagan Tittle hit a grand slam and Laken Distefano pitched a four-hit shutout as the University of North Alabama softball team opened play in the 2018 Gulf South Conference Tournament Thursday with an 8-0 victory over Lee. With the win five-inning mercy-rule win, UNA improves to 43-5 and advances to the second round to face Mississippi College at 3 p.m. Friday at home. Lee will play an elimination game at 12:30 against Montevallo.
 
Against Lee, UNA got a single run in the bottom of the first inning before using a five-run third inning to take control. Bailey Nelson drew a walk to lead off the first. She reached third on consecutive Lee fielding errors before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Alex Brown to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third, Nelson and Meleah Hargett each singled to reach base before Hannah Shollenberger was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Brown drove in another run by reaching on a fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded for Tittle. The senior from Lynn then hit a shot to left center for her 30th career homer to drive in all four runs.
 
Single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings gave UNA the eight-run lead. Mackenzie Roberts homered for the second straight game, leading off the fourth with a solo shot to left center. In the fifth, Veronica Westfall's two-out single scored Tittle from second base to give the Lions the walk-off victory. It was the fourth mercy-rule win over the Flames this season. Earlier in the year, the Lions swept a three-game series on Lee's home field, winning all three contest in six innings or less.
 
Distefano worked all five innings in the circle. The freshman from Florence improved to 16-2 after scattering four hits and striking out six batters.
 
Six different players had one hit each for UNA. The Lions also took advantage of three Lee errors to score a pair of unearned runs.
 
Other first-round games at the UNA Softball Complex on Thursday included UAH defeating West Florida 14-6, Valdosta State defeating Delta State 6-3 and Mississippi College defeating Montevallo 9-1. The double-elimination event is scheduled to run three more days with the GSC championship game slated for 3 p.m. on Sunday.
