LION VOLLEYBALL FALLS TWICE AT JAX STATE INVITE

JACKSONVILLE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a pair of losses Friday at the Jax State Invitational. The Lions (0-2) came up short against Little Rock and host Jacksonville State by identical 3-0 scores

Against Little Rock, UNA struggled at the net in its Division I opener. The Lions hit -.047 with only 17 kills while the Trojans recorded a .455 hitting percentage in the 25-10, 25-18, 25-9 decision.

Little Rock (1-0) used long scoring runs in each contest to pull away. Mya Robinson led the Trojans, hitting .476 with 13 kills.

UNA had its best showing in the second set. Back-to-back service aces by Sophia Brandstetter cut the Little Rock lead to 16-15 and prompt a timeout. The Trojans responded with five straight points and North Alabama could never recover.

UNA led 7-6 in the final set before Little Rock closed the match on a 19-2 run.

Christian Ellwanger led the Lions with seven kills.

North Alabama had a stronger showing against the host Gamecocks. UNA hit .244 and recorded 10 team blocks in the 25-20, 26-24, 26-24 setback.

The Lions were competitive in each set. JSU (1-0) broke a 15-15 tie in the opener with a 10-5 run to take an early lead. After the two teams battled to a 23-23 tie in the second game, UNA fought off a set point before the Gamecocks got consecutive kills to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

JSU used another late surge to complete the sweep in the third set. After leading throughout the game, UNA struggled down the stretch. The Gamecocks took their first lead at 19-18 and pushed the lead to three before kills by Ellwanger and Michay Jackson and a service ace by Ellwanger knotted the score at 21-21.

After JSU regained the lead, the Lions again fought off a set point at 25-24 before two straight JSU kills ended the match.

Brandstetter hit .375 with 11 kills to lead UNA. Jayden Davila-McClary added a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs.

North Alabama will close out play at the event on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. match against Mercer.
