LIONS SPLIT FINAL DAY OF CHATTANOOGA CLASSIC

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., – After sweeping North Carolina-Asheville earlier on Saturday, the University of North Alabama volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to the host Mocs in the championship match of the Classic. The split on the final day of the event gives the Lions a 2-4 record on the season.

Christina Ellwanger had 29 kills in the two matches while Genesis Benetiz had 37 digs.

Against UNC-Asheville, the Lions hit a season-high .280 to get the sweep. Ellwanger hit .300 with 10 digs and a match-high 16 kills in the 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 victory. Malaisia Stallworth added 11 kills and hit .714 for the match. The senior from Loganville, Ga., also had four blocks for the Lions.

UNA trailed in each set before putting together late runs to secure three straight wins.

Ellwanger had six kills in the opening set and the Lions hit .300 as a team in the 25-22 win. The Bulldogs struggled at the net, hitting .167 with four attack errors. Stallworth and Michay Jackson combined for a block at set point to give UNA the victory.

UNA trailed by as many as three on seven different occasions in the second set before using a late surge to pick up the win. UNC-Asheville led 18-15 before the Lions used a 5-1 run to grab their first lead of the game at 20-19. North Alabama kept the momentum down the stretch to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Stallworth had seven kills in the frame to lead the way.

In the third set, the Lions broke a 12-12 with four straight points and never relinquished the lead. UNC-Asheville had just 12 kills in the frame, hitting .128 with six attack errors.

Jayden Davila-McClary recorded her fourth straight double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs. Emma Ellis added 14 assists while Benitez led all defensive players with a match-high 19 digs, including one off of her foot in the second set.

Against Chattanooga, UNA rallied to force its third five-set match of the season before coming up short. The Mocs used a late spurt to pull away for the 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12 victory.

A big rally came up just short in the opening set against Chattanooga. A 12-3 run by UTC gave the home team a 20-9 lead before the Lions made their move. Eight straight points cut the deficit to 20-17 and prompt a UTC timeout. UNA got within a single point at 22-21 before the home closed out the set with three straight points to get the win.

The Lions managed just six kills in the second set, but held UTC to a .000 team hitting percentage in the 25-20 win. Benitez had six digs in the frame as UNA outlasted the Mocs in several long rallies.

The Mocs regained the lead with a strong showing in the third set. The home team hit .323 and had five players with at least two kills in the frame. Catie Ladner led UNA with four kills in the game.

North Alabama stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. Ladner again led the way with four kills, including the game-winner at set point.

The final set featured nine ties and four lead changes before the Mocs held on for the win.

Ellwanger (13 kills, 13 digs), Ladner (10 kills, 14 digs) and Ellis (16 assists, 10 digs) each turned in double-doubles, while Davila-McClary (14 assists) and Benetiz (18 digs) also each reached double figures for the match.

For the weekend, Stallworth hit .290 with 29 kills while Benitez recorded 59 digs for UNA. Both were named to the all-tournament team.

UNA will be in Memphis next weekend for a trio of matches at the Memphis Tiger Invitational. The Lions will take on Tennessee Tech and Louisiana-Monroe before closing the event against the host Tigers.
