Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

LEE DOMINATES THE PAINT IN WIN OVER UNA WOMEN

FLORENCE – Lee dominated the paint, holding North Alabama without a two-point basket until the game's closing minutes in an 83-54 win Thursday evening in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action. The loss gives the Lions a 2-8 overall record with a 1-4 mark in GSC play.

A steal and layup by KeKe Gunter with 1:44 remaining represented the first two-point basket of the game for UNA. Until that point, the Lions did all their scoring from three-point range and the free throw line, missing their first 33 shot attempts from the floor within the arch.

While UNA struggled to score from close range, Lee was able to score at will, getting 42 points in the paint. The Flames also had six blocked shots and held a commanding 54-36 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive boards for 22 second-chance points.

After shooting 16.7 percent from the floor in the first two quarters, North Alabama trailed 23-12 at the end of the first quarter and faced a 38-23 deficit at the half.

In the third quarter, a 9-2 run by the Lions briefly cut the deficit to 10 points. A free throw by Katelyn Nunley made the score 47-37 with 3:52 remaining. The Flames, however, closed the period with a 9-4 spurt, then opened the fourth quarter with an 11-1 run to put the game out of reach.

A basket in the lane by Nunley in the final minute of play represented the only two-pointer of the game for the Lions. After going 13-of-18 from the free throw line, Nunley finished with 15 points to lead UNA. Gunter and Katelyn Kostel added 12 points each on the night.

Lee (7-3 overall, 4-1 GSC) was led by Erin Walsh, who scored 24 points. Carrie Cheeks also had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Flames.

UNA will host Shorter on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
