SOFTBALL LIONS SWEEP WEST FLORIDA TO OPEN GSC PLAY

PENSACOLA, Fla., – North Alabama pitchers Bree Blevins and Hillary Carpenter each tossed complete games without yielding an earned run as the Lions downed West Florida 7-0 and 5-1 Saturday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The road sweep gives UNA a 9-1 record with a 2-0 start to GSC play.

In the opener, Blevins (4-1) scattered three hits over seven innings with 12 strikeouts to get the shutout.

Offensively, the Lions produced seven runs off eight hits. Four of the runs came via home runs in the last two innings. Already ahead 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning, UNA got a pinch-hit, leadoff double by Carey Grace Peebles. After two pop ups, Libby Olinger then connected on a two-out homer to left field.

The Lions led off the top of the seventh with back-to-back home runs by Brooklynn Clark and Reagan Tittle to account for the final score. The Argonauts got a pair of base runners in the bottom of the frame before Blevins struck out the final two batters to end the game.

Olinger and Tittle each went 2-for-4 from the plate in the first game. The duo also combined for five RBI in the opener.

The second game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when each team plated a single run. Madeline Lee led off the top of the inning with an infield single. She reached third on a double by Peebles before later scoring on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

After West Florida answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, UNA used a three-run fifth inning to take control. An RBI-double by Tittle gave the Lions the lead for good. The Lions also scored a run on a ground out by Lee and a sacrifice fly by Peebles.

In the top of the seventh, an RBI-single by Peebles wrapped up the scoring on the day. She finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.

Carpenter finished the game with 11 strikeouts. She allowed five hits with only one walk to improve to 5-0 on the season.

UNA will go for the three-game sweep with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the UWF Softball Complex.
