SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS FINAL DAY OF CHILLOUT

HUNTSVILLE – The University of North Alabama softball team split the final day of the UAH Charger Chillout on Saturday, downing Maryville 2-0 before falling to Southern Indiana 5-3. The split gives the Lions a 7-1 overall record, including a 5-1 showing at the event in Huntsville.

Against Maryville, Libby Olinger went 3-for-3 at the plate while Hillary Carpenter tossed a three-hit shutout.

UNA scored both runs in the bottom of the second inning. Reagan Tittle and Madeline Lee led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Tittle scored on a groundout by Harlie Barkley. An RBI-double by Courtney Shields then drove home Lee to give the Lions the lead for good.

Shields finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Carpenter struck out seven in the complete-game victory to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The win over the Saints set up a showdown against USI, featuring the event's last remaining undefeated teams. Southern Indiana pitcher Brooke Harmening held UNA to a single earned run to give the Screaming Eagles (6-0) the victory.

Harmening struck out five batters to become the school's all-time career leader. North Alabama managed seven hits, but stranded eight runners on base.

At the plate, USI scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second. An RBI-single by Olinger scored Harlie Barkley in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-1. In the fourth inning, Lee singled and later scored on an error to make it a one-run game. The Eagles, however, plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame.

UNA made one last push in the top of the seventh inning. Shields singled and scored on another USI error. The Lions, however, would get no closer.

Shields and Olinger each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. BreeAnna Blevins (3-1) took the loss in the circle.

UNA will now turn its attention to Gulf South Conference play. The Lions travel to West Florida next weekend for a three-game series against the Argonauts.
