MOBILE – After getting an extra-inning victory in the opener, the University of North Alabama softball team completed the double-header sweep over Spring Hill with a one-hit shutout in the second game. The 5-4, 3-0 victories give the No. 15 Lions a 25-5 record heading into this weekend's pivotal Gulf South Conference showdown against No. 7 UAH.
Against Spring Hill, UNA rallied to tie the first game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. UNA entered the frame trailing 4-2 before an RBI-single by Courtney Shields and a bases-loaded walk by Libby Olinger tied the game.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the 10th inning. After Shields was placed on second base via the international tie-breaker rule, she was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Bailey Nelson. Shields then scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the inning, the Badgers also had a runner placed on second. Bree Blevins, however, retired three straight batters for the Lions to get the win. For the game, Blevins scattered five hits over the full 10 innings to improve to 10-3 on the season.
Spring Hill (23-5) scored all four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Blevins recovered and allowed just two hits the rest of the way in nine straight shutout innings of work.
At the plate, Shields and Carey Grace Peebles each notched two hits with an RBI in the opener. UNA plated single runs in the top of the second and third innings to set up the seventh-inning rally.
In the second game, UNA scored a run in the top of the fifth inning and two in the seventh in the 3-0 victory. Hillary Carpenter took a no-hitter into the seventh before Spring Hill broke through with a pinch-hit, one-out single. A double-play on the next at-bat, however, ended the game, giving Carpenter a 13-2 mark on the year.
Shields and Nelson each went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UNA. An RBI-single by Nelson scored Harlie Barkley from second for the game's first run. After a lead-off double by Shields in the top of the seventh, Nelson recorded her second RBI with a single to left field. Nelson later scored from third on a ground out by Brittany Gillison to account for the final score.
North Alabama will host the three-game GSC series against UAH. The two nationally-ranked teams will play a double-header at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a single game slated for 2 p.m. the following day at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
