LION SOFTBALL SWEEPS NO. 7 UAH TO IMPROVE TO 27-5

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team got an extra-inning victory in the opener and a 3-2 win in the second game to complete a sweep over No. 7 UAH Saturday afternoon at home. The two wins give UNA a 27-5 record on the season with a 12-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

Reagan Tittle hit a two-run walk off home run in the first game to give the Lions the 2-0 victory in nine innings. UAH's Kimberly Jack and UNA's Bree Blevins had battled to a scoreless tie though the first eight frames. The Chargers got a single and a walk in the top of the ninth before stranding both runners.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brittany Gillison drew a lead-off walk and had Amy Carden come in to pinch run. Carden reached second on a sacrifice bunt and remained there after another ground out brought Tittle to the plate with two outs. The freshman from Lynn connected on the first pitch and sent it over the leftfield fence for the winning hit.

UNA had five hits in the opener, including two from Libby Olinger. Blevins got the nine-inning shutout to improve to 11-3 on the season. She struck out four with only one walk.

In the second game, UAH struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. The Lions responded by stringing together five hits to score two runs in the bottom of the third. An RBI-ground out by Courtney Shields and a run-scoring single by Olinger gave the Lions a 2-1 lead.

The Chargers tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. After singling to reach base and advancing to third in the inning, Victoria Crumpton scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 2-2.

UNA answered in the bottom of the frame. Shields led off the inning with a double to left center. She reached third on a single by Olinger and scored on a ground out by Gillison.

UAH was able to get the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings. The Chargers had runners at first and second with one out in the seventh when pitcher Hillary Carpenter got Haley Thompson to line into a game-ending double play. Carpenter (14-2) finished the complete game with two strikeouts and one earned run. She allowed six hits with two walks.

Shields and Olinger each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game. Olinger finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday with a single game slated for 2 p.m.
