FLORENCE – Shorter rallied from a 4-1 deficit to post a 5-4 victory of the University of North Alabama softball team on Saturday. The third loss in the last four games drops the Lions' overall record to 21-9 with a 16-8 mark in Gulf South Conference play. UNA must win at least one game in a double-header against the Hawks on Sunday to secure the third seed in the upcoming GSC tournament.
On Saturday, RBI-doubles by Libby Olinger in the first two innings helped the Lions jump out to the 4-1 lead. UNA finished the game with only three hits, however, as Shorter's Kalei Kimbrell (5-2) came on in relief to pitch a five-inning shutout without yielding a hit.
Shorter (30-13) began the rally in the top of the fifth inning by plating three runs to tie the game. A leadoff homerun by Kameron Carter and a two-run double by Maggie Meacham tied the game at 4-4. The Hawks took the lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Ericka Bynum. Shorter finished the game with three homers.
Bree Blevins took the loss for UNA. She allowed five runs off seven hits to fall to 12-6 on the season. Olinger finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Brittany Gillison recorded the Lions only other hit with an RBI-single in the first inning.
The two teams will close the regular season with the double-header on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex.
