REBOUNDING PACES NO. 17 UNION PAST UNA WOMEN

JACKSON, Tenn., – Second-chance points proved to be a huge factor for Union in a 79-55 home victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Monday evening. The 17th-ranked Bulldogs turned 19 offensive rebounds in to 25 points on the night to improve to 14-2 on the season and 8-2 in Gulf South Conference play.

UNA, which played without leading scorer KeKe Gunter after an injury two days ago against Christian Brothers, dropped its sixth straight game to fall to 2-13 on the year and 1-8 in league play. Alexus Patterson had a game-high 19 points for the Lions, but Union had four players reach double digits in scoring.

The Bulldogs led from start to finish in the contest, grabbing a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. A basket by Janae Lyde early in the second period tied the game at 18-18 before the home team second seven straight points to take the lead for good.

After Union led 39-27 at the half, the Lions got within eight on a pair of free throws by Kierra Groce at the 5:42 mark of the third quarter. The Bulldogs responded with a free throw and a three-point basket to push the lead to 12 and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Union led 58-43 at the end of the third quarter before outscoring the Lions 21-12 in the final period.

Katelyn Nunley added 10 points for North Alabama. Lyde finished with six points and five assists for the game. Tiara Caldwell led the Bulldogs with 16 points.

After playing four straight GSC road games, UNA will return home for its next contest Saturday against UAH. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
