WEST FLORIDA KNOCKS OFF UNA WOMEN 86-61

FLORENCE – Five players reached double figures in scoring as West Florida knocked of North Alabama 86-61 Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. With the win, the Argonauts kept pace in the Gulf South Conference with a 9-3 league record while UNA fell to 1-11 in league action.
 
After jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first half, UWF (11-5 overall) held off a third-quarter run by the Lions before dominating the final period of play. The Argonauts shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half and took a 44-31 lead into the break.
 
North Alabama (2-15 overall) got to within four points in the third quarter. Consecutive baskets by Janae Lyde and a pair of free throws by Brynn Holden capped a 6-0 run and made the score 44-40 with 6:24 remaining in the period.
 
The Argonauts countered with a 9-2 spurt to push the lead to 11 points. A three-point basket by Savannah Stults cut the deficit to 53-45 before West Florida regained a double-digit lead on its next possession and kept it the rest of the way. A half-court three-pointer at the buzzer by Alex Coyne gave the visitors a 62-47 lead at the end of the third quarter.
 
Lyde led UNA with 11 points. The senior from Albany, New York connected on a three-pointer and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. KeKe Gunter added 10 points for the Lions.
 
Katie Bobos and Kelly Preston scored 17 points each to lead West Florida. Toni Brewer added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For the game, UWF held a commanding 41-21 advantage in rebounding.
 
UNA will host Valdosta State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
