LION TENNIS SWEEPS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis teams each recorded a Gulf South Conference road victory on Thursday at Christian Brothers. The UNA men posted an 8-1 win while the women's team picked up the 9-0 sweep.

On the men's side, the Lions won two of the three doubles matches before sweeping singles play. Four of the six singles matches were 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victories for the Lions, who improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in GSC play.

"It's always good to get a GSC win and that was the case today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "It was good to get Benji back out there to test the ankle."

Benjamin Poire, who was injured on Feb. 13 against West Florida, missed the UT-Chattanooga match. The graduate student from Amiens, France, returned against CBU to post a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Other straight-sets winners in singles play for the Lions included Miguel Garcia (No. 4), Max Druppel (No. 5) and Taylor Ausbon (No. 6).

The UNA women were able build momentum from a sweep in doubles play before finishing off CBU with six more victories in singles action. Claire DeGeorge and Claudia Arroyo led the way with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins on the day.

The win gives North Alabama a 3-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in league action.

"It's good to get a win," added Bishop. "However, we will have to play better against a very good Delta State team coming up next."

The upcoming GSC matches against the Statesmen are set for 10 a.m. Sunday morning in Florence.
